2018 Winner of Old Time Music Scholarship – Lieselotte Heil

Ms. Heil will use the scholarship towards paying to attend workshops in Unaccompanied
Appalachian Ballads and Old Meeting House Songs (unaccompanied), both taught by
Sheila Kay Adams, and Finding Your Voice, taught by Charles Williams, during the
Augusta Heritage Center’s Vocal Week program, held at Davis & Elkins College in
Elkins, West Virginia.

Lieselotte’s current Old Time Music related activities include participating regularly in jam
sessions at Lewisburg’s Farmers’ Market and Winter Market, as well as performing solo
fiddle and unaccompanied Appalachian ballads in venues such as the Alderson
Farmers’ Market (as the featured performer several times each summer), private
parties, church group presentations, community festivals (most recently in Ronceverte
and Alderson), and inside Lewisburg’s Lost World Caverns as part of an annual fundraiser
for local environmental groups (this fall will be my third year performing in this
amazing venue, with acoustics perfectly suited for both solo fiddle and unaccompanied
ballad singing), and earlier this year, sheperformed solo fiddle tunes and unaccompanied
ballads as a featured performer at the Cross Plains Coffeehouse in Cross Plains, WI.
She is always looking for additional venues in which to share her love of old-time music,
both through playing  fiddle and through sharing the longstanding but rarely
performed tradition of unaccompanied ballad singing. Lieselottes especially passionate about
carrying on the unaccompanied ballad singing because so few singers still regularly
perform this hauntingly beautiful genre of old-time music. .

Lieselotte has received a number of awards in the “Folk Song” category for my
unaccompanied ballad singing (1st place, 2017 & 2018 – Henry Reed Memorial Fiddlers’
Convention, Newport, VA; 1st place, 2016 – Highland County Fiddlers Convention,
Monterey, VA; two second place, three third place, two fourth place awards at Henry
Reed Memorial Fiddlers’ Convention), in the “Fiddle-Banjo” duet category at the Henry
Reed Memorial Fiddlers’ Convention (including two 3rd place and several 4th and 5th
place awards) and in the old-time band category, also at the Henry Reed Memorial
Fiddlers’ Convention (two 3rd places and one 5thplace).
